Netflix Blurs Margot Robbie’s Nude Scene in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’

Update: The original film has been restored after we contacted Netflix.

Margot Robbie’s two biggest movies are “Barbie,” in which her character doesn’t have a vagina, and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which her character also no longer has a vagina, thanks to Netflix censorship.

Believe it or not, Martin Scorsese’s 2013 stock market crime epic has been blurred below the belt. It’s not just the iconic moment when Robbie’s character reveals herself to seduce Leonardo DiCaprio’s sleazy Jordan Belfort – every instance of full-frontal nudity in the film has been censored.

To be clear, there is a lot of nudity in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” That’s intentional. The movie revels in the excesses of these characters. It’s meant to shock you. By blurring out abnormally large areas of these actors’ anatomy, it pulls you out of the story to focus on the wrong thing.

Believe it or not, “The Wolf of Wall Street” is streaming unedited on Tubi, which is free. So you’re paying to watch something censored.

Who’s watching “The Wolf of Wall Street” and not minding the orgies, the drug use, the topless nudity, and the 506 F-bombs (yes, literally), but suddenly becoming offended by additional nudity?

Streaming Smarter has reached out to Netflix and Martin Scorsese for comment.

When Disney+ debuted in 2020, there was controversy over very bad CGI hair applied to cover Daryl Hannah’s bare bottom in “Splash.” But that’s Disney+, where you can expect sensitivity to such things, even if it does wreck the original filmmakers’ intent. I just checked, and it appears her unaltered backside is back.

Another Botched Streaming Situation

This censorship comes to light the day after HBO Max caught grief for how it didn’t vet its 4K versions of “Mad Men.” In widely circulated social media images, we can see HBO Max’s version fails to remove the on-set crew member tasked with supplying a fountain of fake vomit to actor John Slattery.

HBO Max also incorrectly titled several “Mad Men” episodes.

Ace TV writer Alan Sepinwall outlined how this is just the latest made-for-streaming fiasco. In other famously bad decisions, the 16:9 conversion of old 4:3 episodes of “The Simpsons” sometimes cut off important sight gags.

It might make sense to expect altered versions of TV shows and movies if you’re watching some free service or if it’s on network TV. When you’re watching on a premium SVOD service, you should be entitled to the original film, even if the content is problematic or shocking. Disney+ certainly has a significant catalog of troublesome content, and it often places a disclaimer before such films. That feels like a decent compromise.

To rob viewers of a choice to view an original work feels wrong at best, and oppressive at worst.
