HBO Changes Names of 6 Channels

The folks at Warner Bros. are on a renaming spree this year. Max went back to HBO Max, and now 6 premium linear channels are getting new names.

  • HBO2 becomes HBO Hits
  • HBO Signature becomes HBO Drama
  • HBO Zone becomes HBO Movies
  • MoreMAX becomes Cinemax Hits
  • ActionMAX becomes Cinemax Action
  • 5starMAX becomes Cinemax Classics

Over the summer, HBO killed off HBO Family, ThrillerMax, OuterMax, and MovieMax. The death of HBO Family coincided with HBO Max dumping nearly all of its kid-friendly programming.

As most TV packages that include HBO now offer free HBO Max and that service has all of the content on the platform, we don’t have as much need for these linear channels. Still, it’s fun to scroll through a TV interface and stumble on a cool movie you wouldn’t otherwise seek out. DIRECTV even has a cool feature where you can start a movie from the beginning, even if it appears in the linear channel guide.

Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced it will split itself in two, sending most linear TV channels off to a new company saddled with debt. HBO will remain with Warner Bros, while other linear assets like TBS, HGTV, TNT, and TLC will be part of a new company called Discovery Global.
