Apple tvOS Announcements from WWDC 2025: Not Much
Today, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference event. As we’ve come to expect from Apple, tvOS was largely ignored. But here’s everything they announced.
Apple TV+ is getting new thumbnail art. It looks similar to what you’d see while browsing Netflix.
Apple TV+ announced its upcoming lineup:
- Chief of War (with Jason Momoa)
- Foundation S3
- Slow Horses S5
- Loot S3
- Highest 2 Lowest (film with Denzel Washington)
- The Morning Show S4
- The Lost Bus (film with Matthew McConaughey)
- Invasion S3
- Platonic S2
- The Savant
The company announced Apple TV will have profiles that can appear when the unit wakes, so you can launch the interface with your last-watched shows, while your kids launch one with their shows and movies.

And if you’re playing a song through Apple Music, you can launch a karaoke mode that feeds your iPhone’s microphone through your TV’s sound system.
What We Didn’t Get
Once again, Apple refused to announce a new Apple TV device. The last major announcement was back in 2017 when the company announced the Apple TV 4K.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my Apple TV. It’s the device I use most when streaming TV, and I stream all day long with this job. Apple TV is still my choice for the best media streaming player. But it would be nice to get something new.
At this point, Apple TV is becoming “just another box.” It’s still the best box (miles ahead of Roku, Fire TV, Onn, or competitors), but it seems Apple is leaving the bulk of development to the various app developers. Something like Plex has grown leaps and bounds over the last few years, while hardware has remained stagnant.
I’d like if Apple TV could better connect to the rest of my Apple ecosystem – my Mac desktop, iPad, and iPhone don’t benefit all that much from having an Apple TV beyond AirPlay. (You can also AirPlay from an iPhone to Roku, so that isn’t much of a bonus.)
