Disney+ App Has New Look Ahead of Hulu Shutdown

Log into Disney+ and you’ll see a new look. After cluttering the home screen with scattered Hulu and ESPN content, the refresh makes navigation much simpler.

There’s a For You tab that loads first. That still features content from all three services, depending on which plan you have access to. Then there are dedicated Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN tabs to consolidate the content. This is a huge step forward, compared to how the company was trying to retrofit the old Disney+ platform.

Like many of its competitors, the new-look Disney+ gives a lot of screen space to a “hero image” carousel at the top to draw your attention to content you may enjoy.

Disney has announced the Hulu app will shut down in 2026. Considering how well this integration functions, Hulu could be facing the axe in the next 4-5 months.

If you read the movie descriptions on that top carousel, they do seem like poor AI summaries, though. For “Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace,” the summary is “Jedi discover Anakin Skywalker, a boy unusually strong in the Force,” which would make no sense to anyone who hasn’t seen the movie.

For “The Greatest Showman,” the summary line is, “A bold and original musical celebrating the birth of show business and dreams coming to life.” That is true, but it makes no mention of Hugh Jackman or Zendaya or the award-winning Broadway composers behind the music.

For “Avatar,” the summary says, “A man embarks on an adventure to an exotic world that he learns to call home and fights to protect.” No mention of James Cameron or the dazzling all-CGI world he created. No mention of its 3 Academy Awards or the fact that it’s the biggest box office hit in movie history. As a non-AI writer, I might try to convince you to watch the movie by saying, “Hey, wanna see a bunch of blue CGI space-monkeys ride flying dinosaurs and blow stuff up?” Of course, I’m biased, but I think that’s a better sales pitch.

Under the Hulu tab, the top carousel doesn’t even bother trying to convince you to watch. It’s just an image of the show with a sentence saying how frequently new episodes are available.

I did notice that the screens loaded much slower on my Apple TV than they had in the past. But overall, these changes are helpful to silo the growing library into
