FanDuel Sports Network announced today it will stream some live, local NHL and NBA games for free on Pluto TV, Prime Video, and Samsung TV Plus. The company says more platforms will come. And those games will be available over-the-air with an antenna.

The company also says it will launch a 24/7 FAST channel (likely on those same platforms). The channel will include shows like “Golic & Golic” and “Countdown Live.”

FanDuel on Fire

Since the start of the most recent NHL and NBA seasons, FanDuel Sports Network has been surging.

Through the first three weeks of the NHL season with its seven partners:

  • Total audienceย (linear + direct-to-consumer + TV everywhere) is upย 29%ย year-over-year (YoY).
  • Total minutes streamedย upย 46%
  • Unique streamersย upย 47%
  • TV audience up 26%

Through the first three nights of the NBA season with 12 of its 13 partners in action on the network:

  • Total audience upย 12%
  • Total minutes streamed upย 36%
  • Unique streamers upย 56%
  • TV audience up 7%

FanDuel is unique among regional sports networks because it not only offers its channels on live TV providers like DIRECTV and Fubo. Or you can subscribe with FanDuel’s standalone streaming service. Or you can add the service as a channel with Prime Video.

That Prime Video add-on is a real ace in the hole for FanDuel. Analytics firm Antenna estimates roughly 1 in 3 new streaming subscriptions come through “channel” add-ons through marketplaces like Prime Video.

Antenna estimates that a shockingย 89%ย of people who signed up for Apple TV, Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Paramount+ through Prime Video would not have done so if the service were not available on the platform. This equates to an eye-poppingย 5.6 millionย incremental sign-ups within 90 days of their availability on Prime Video.

Other regional sports networks haven’t tapped into the Prime Video ecosystem, but FanDuel’s success suggests they should. By offering games for free, the service is likely to pick up even more fans. And it’s even offering single-game access starting Dec. 5.

Innovations like these won’t solve the fractured regional sports landscape, but they do make it more tolerable.
