FOX Kills Free 4K Workaround as Fox Sports App Shuts Down

The Grim Reaper has claimed the Fox Sports App. As first reported by Awful Announcing, Fox sent an email to customers on April 7, letting them know the Fox Sports App will sunset in 30 days. But when I tried to access it on my Apple TV, I got the screen you see above. There was no way to enter the Fox Sports App.

Why This Stinks

While some live TV providers like DIRECTV and Sling TV give users free 4K broadcasts, other providers like YouTube TV and Fubo hide their 4K channels behind additional paywalls. Hulu + Live TV doesn’t offer 4K at all.

But if you paid for any live TV package, you could get sports in 4K for free as long as you used your credentials to log into the Fox Sports app.

With the loss of the Fox Sports App, that loophole will close.

What’s the Solution for Fox Sports in 4K Now?

You have several options with live TV providers to be able to watch 4K broadcasts from FOX and FS1.

Sling TV

A great budget option is Sling TV. This service offers lots of different tiers and channel configurations, helping you save money. If you want to load it up with features and channels, you can. But it offers some very smart packages. You can even use your Sling credentials to log into the FOX One app.

The dirt-cheap Sling Select package offers any 4K broadcasts from the FOX group.

Sling TV (Select)

$19.99/mo+

Includes ABC, NBC, and FOX in some areas

DIRECTV

DIRECTV includes 4K at no additional cost. You could get the $39.99 MyNews package if you only want FOX or choose MySports if you also want FS1 and FS2.

FOX One

Fox would like you to sign up for FOX One. That service does offer some 4K broadcasts at no additional cost. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of non-sports bloat on the service, including the 24/7 right-wing hyperventilation of Fox News Channel. You can’t subscribe just to the sports on FOX and FS1. It’s also pretty expensive for what it is.

YouTube TV

The most popular live streamer gets tricky with its 4K plan. “4K Plus” is available free for 30 days, but the price is $4.99/month for your first year. After that, it’s a $9.99 upcharge.

YouTube TV

$82.99/mo

Fubo

This streaming service is a shambles and it doesn’t even offer NBC, so the value of sports in 4K is already cut in half. If you want 4K with Fubo, you need to sign up for their Ultra plan, which would cost as much as $100.98 after your regional sports fee is applied. We don’t recommend this.
