Max Adds Account Sharing Feature: $7.99 for 1 Extra Person
It was only a matter of time. Max has introduced an Extra Member Add-On feature designed to cut down on subscribers sharing their passwords. It costs $7.99/month and allows Max subscribers to create one adult profile for a person who lives outside their home.
$9.99/mo.
Extra Members will have their own login credentials separate from the primary account. Extra members can stream from one profile on one device at a time. They will have access to the same features as the primary account owner’s base plan.
The plan costs $7.99/month whether the primary subscriber has the ad-free plan or the ad-supported option.
The Extra Member option is not available if you subscribe to Max through a bundle or through another provider like Prime Video.
To add an Extra Member, go to your Max subscription settings. If you have a nasty breakup, you can terminate the feature through the same screen.
When an account owner invites an Extra Member to create an account, they can choose to transfer a single adult profile, bringing over the watch history, recommendations, and settings associated with that profile to their new Max account.
Why is Max Doing This?
Most likely, Max will start cracking down on password sharing. Netflix did the same thing.
Streaming services lose lots of money to people sharing passwords. Your IP address will probably get associated with the primary Max account. TVs or streaming devices on other IP addresses will get flagged as being outside the home.
Ways to Save Money on Max
Honestly, this Extra Member plan may work out fine. You and a friend could split the cost of the Standard plan plus an Extra Member account ($16.99 + $7.99), so each person pays $12.49/month to go ad-free. That’s a more reasonable cost than the usual Standard Plan ($16.99).
Max also offers a discount over 30% if you sign up for an annual plan before May 7.
- Basic with Ads is $79.99 (Save nearly $40/year).
- Standard (ad-free) is $139.99 (Save nearly $64).
- Premium (ad-free) is $169.99 (Save nearly $82).
I don’t usually recommend the annual plan for Max because its most important shows are usually only 10 episodes or so, and the wait between seasons can be 2-3 years. You’re better off signing up for Max only when you’re interested in an upcoming show. (Now is a great time to sign up for a month or two.)
Another great option is to bundle Max with Disney+ and Hulu. You can get 3 with ads for $16.99 (save nearly $13) or choose the ad-free bundle for $29.99 (save nearly $22/month).
