Netflix Boosts Kids Section with ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Peppa Pig’
If your kids are like mine, Netflix is their go-to entertainment every weekend morning. Now, the streaming giant is adding two of the most popular shows for preschoolers: “Sesame Street” and “Peppa Pig.”
“Peppa Pig” seasons 3-7 are now available on Netflix, but “Sesame Street” will arrive late this year.
Importantly, new episodes of “Sesame Street” will also be available on the excellent PBS Kids app. If you have preschool-aged kids, I highly recommend it. All the shows are educational, engaging, and perfectly created for your child’s emotional and mental development. It’s better than Netflix because there isn’t as much mindless TV available.
Netflix will also develop games involving “Sesame Street” and “Peppa Pig” characters. The World of Peppa Pig, arriving next month, will be an all-in-one app where kids can play with puzzles, mini-games, memory challenges, coloring books, and more.
Netflix reports nearly 15 percent of all its viewing comes from the kids and family genre, and these moves will solidify it as a must-have streamer for families. At this point, it’s really only a race between Netflix and Disney+. Paramount+ also has a nice kids section, but a lack of investment in Nickelodeon is worrisome.
“Sesame Street” comes to Netflix after a few years with Max. Warner Bros. Discovery has given up on trying to make its streamer a destination for the entire family. It’s reclaiming the name HBO Max and dropping nearly everything of interest for children.
“Sesame Street” and other PBS programs are under threat from the Trump administration, which is working to defund public broadcasting.
