Philo Raises Prices on Legacy Plans

If there’s one constant in the streaming TV game, it’s rising prices. Some Philo subscribers have been shielded from that reality because they were grandfathered into $16 or $20 plans. But next month, the cheap ride is over. Here’s how Philo’s CEO Andrew McCollum broke the news.

I want to share an important update, and speak directly to you, our longtime Philo subscribers.

From the beginning, Philo set out to be a streaming service built around simplicity, affordability, and respect. We have worked hard to maintain that – having never raised prices on our existing subscribers, or forced them to upgrade. When we have changed our pricing for new subscribers, we’ve added value at the same time.

Unfortunately, the truth is that we lose money on our oldest plans, and have for some time. We’ve done what we can to absorb those costs out of loyalty to our subscribers. But in order to deliver on our values, we have to build a sustainable business, so we’re making changes to some of our subscription plans.

What does this mean for you?

  1. Your plan will now include 1-year unlimited DVR, and will be $25/month plus taxes where applicable, starting on September 23rd, 2025.
  2. You can visit your account page for more information or to manage your subscription.
  3. If you cancel, you can still enjoy 100+ free channels and a 30-day DVR with the Philo app.

We hope you’ll continue to be a subscriber, but we understand that some of you may choose to cancel. If you do decide to cancel, you can still enjoy over 110 free channels, a 30-day DVR, and a growing selection of movies and shows you can stream any time.

To make changes to your subscription, go to your Account page or contact our customer support team. They are available 24/7 by phone, email, or live chat.

Whatever decision you come to, we’re deeply grateful you’ve been part of our story.

While subscribers are upset about the change, the new rate is still lower than the $28/month new subscribers would have to pay.

What Are Other Good Budget Live TV Options?

While Philo is unique, there are other providers you may consider.

Sling TV

With plans now starting as low as $19.99/month, Sling offers users lots of different ways to customize their channel lineup. It offers most of the most important TV channels, but the price can escalate if you want a large bundle.

DIRECTV

DIRECTV offers several small channel packages, including the $19.99 MyKids bundle, $34.99 MyEntertainment, and $39.99 MyNews. It’s a great user experience, and DIRECTV offers more channels than any other live TV provider if you ever decide to upgrade.

Frndly TV

If you need a live TV fix for the lowest possible price, Frndly TV starts at $8.99/month, though you can get it cheaper with an annual plan. Frndly TV is missing some of the channels you may enjoy with Philo, but the price is right.
