Plex More Than Doubling Plex Pass Price
Plex is one of our favorite ways to watch free TV and stream media from our hard drives. Although you can use it for free, its best features are kept behind a paywall. What is Plex?
Plex is the most versatile streaming platform available. You can use it as a free streamer and get tons of content. You can also use Plex to stream content from your computer’s hard drive. If you get really fancy, you can even use Plex to record content from an antenna.
Free Streaming With Plex
Plex gives you 600+ free TV channels and 50,000 free on-demand titles from Warner Brothers, Lionsgate, MGM, and more.
You’ll get dozens of local news options and entertainment channels like SNL Vault, CraftsyTV, TED, Court TV Legendary Trials, BUZZR, Dark Matter TV, Johnny Carson TV, The Carol Burnett Show, PBS Food, BBC Earth, ION, CBS Sports Golazo Network, Storage Wars By A&E, and FIFA+.
Movie Rentals on Plex
You can rent almost any movie through Plex. Prices vary, but new releases are typically $5.99-$9.99 for a 48-hour rental. Older titles are often $3.99.
Personal Media Streaming and Sharing with Plex
If you have movies, photos, or music on your computer, you can give Plex access to those files, then stream them on your TV, streaming device, mobile device, or tablet.
If your friends or family have Plex accounts, they can access your media if you want. You control what is shared with whom. Likewise, they can choose what to share with you.
I use it to share vacation videos with my family, kind of like a private Netflix server.
Access Content on Other Streaming Services
Plex has a great feature where you can list the other streaming services you have. Search for a title in Plex and if it’s available to stream on one of your services, Plex will allow you to click out to view that title on that streamer. This means you’ll spend less time trying to find your favorite show or movie.

If you have music on your hard drive, download the Plexamp app and you can use it to stream your favorite albums.

How to Record and Play Local TV with Plex
If you’ve paid for Plex Pass, you’ve unlocked one of my favorite features. Grab an antenna and a HD HomeRun box. Connect the antenna to the HD HomeRun box and connect the HD HomeRun box to your router (or mesh network pod). Once you do a quick channel scan within Plex, you can record anything your antenna can pull in. I’ve used it to record sports and award shows. It’s also come in handy during severe weather.
If you choose a live TV streamer like Sling TV or DIRECTV STREAM’s genre packs, you may not have local channels, so the ability to stream and record locals through Plex is a big deal.
What’s remarkable is that Plex Pass offers a lifetime subscription at all. That’s rare to find with software in 2025. I’ve used Plex for several years and I’ve been really happy with the Plex Pass premium features. I’d highly recommend it.
