Prime Video Rolls Out AI-Powered Season Recaps to Refresh Your Memory

With streaming TV shows sometimes taking years between seasons, you can be forgiven for forgetting what happened the last time you saw your favorite characters. Now, Prime Video is turning to AI to help jog your memory.

Prime Video now has “Video Recaps” on select original series. Amazon explains, “Video Recaps use AI to summarize a showโ€™s most pertinent plot points with a theatrical-quality video that includes narration, dialogue, and music.”

$8.99/mo.

Will these be any good? Forgive me for being skeptical that AI can “deeply understand the most pivotal moments that will resonate with viewers.”

If you’ve ever read the work of Roger Ebert or Alan Sepinwall, you know that a great critic can compel you to watch a movie or show you may otherwise miss. Is the AI just scanning the scripts for a character’s death or an explosion or a kiss? Can AI properly identify a great line of TV dialogue like, “I am the danger,” or, “That’s what the money is for,” or “You come at the king, you best not miss”?

AI has its place, but I’ve seen a lot of the garbage it generates. And I wouldn’t trust it to appreciate the nuance of drama.

In any case, you can access these recaps today on series including “Fallout,”ย “Jack Ryan,”ย “Upload,”ย “Bosch,” andย “The Rig.”

$8.99/mo.
