Report: Disney+ and Hulu Saw 1.7 Million Cancellations Over Kimmel
How bad was the fallout from Disney’s brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel? According to journalist Marisa Kabas, Disney+ and Hulu lost 1.7 million accounts over it.
The day the company reinstated Kimmel, it also revealed a wide-ranging price hike across its streaming services.
We should discover the real damage when Disney releases its quarterly earnings report November 5. The company may have some ways to hide the negative news. When the company’s Hotstar brand lost important Indian cricket rights they began bleeding millions of subscriptions. From then on, Disney shoved the Disney+ Hotstar number to a separate line on their earnings report. Disney eventually spun Hotstar into a new company where it is a minority stakeholder.
Disney could choose to merely release combined subscriber numbers like Warner Bros. Discovery, hoping that the growth of the ESPN app will cover the losses at Hulu and Disney+.
Regardless of any successes at ESPN, the next quarter is looking nasty for Disney. Between the price hikes, Kimmel-related defections, a soft theatrical release schedule, a looming recession that will surely drag on their theme parks and cruises, and a remarkably light streaming slate, Disney+ and Hulu are looking like luxuries few can afford.
