Will Sony Pictures Core Be Available Without Prime Video?

It’s possible this is just a “soft launch” to gauge interest in a standalone streaming service.

Sony has wisely sidestepped the ferocious streaming battle that broke out at the beginning of the decade. Instead, they’ve made lucrative deals with Netflix, Disney, and others.

Parrot Analytics ran some numbers last year that suggested Sony’s titles are in high demand across all the platforms where they license content.

Chart of Sony Pictures Demand

This late in the game, it seems unlikely Sony would fire up its own streaming service, but Sony Pictures Core could be a home for titles that aren’t being licensed elsewhere. And with media companies paying a premium to gobble up competitors, this could also be a way to entice another bidder with deep pockets.

Sony’s most lucrative property is probably the Spider-Man franchise. It’s the most important piece of Marvel’s intellectual property Disney doesn’t own. Because of their ownership obligations, Sony finds itself having to continue generating Spider-adjacent films if it wants to keep the character. That explains the slapdash adaptations of “Morbius” and “Madame Web.” But Sony has found a way to score with both of its animated “Spider-Verse” films.

You’ll note that the Spider-Man films are not on Sony Pictures Core, probably because other streamers are willing to pay a premium to have them.

Should You Sign Up for Sony Pictures Core?

For a 7-day free trial, why not? Right now, the library is a little thin for the full $6.99 price, but considering it does have some hard-to-stream gems, it may be worth adding to your rotation.
